I see that banks are going to stop the practice of charging commission on overseas debit card purchases.
Why are they suddenly being so kind and generous?
Well, because they know they are going to be able to replace that income, plus a bit extra, from other sources.
The Bank of Scotland have recently “improved their Internet banking for us” by no longer allowing us to make free transfers between business and private accounts – not those of our customers, but our own accounts.
They have also “helped us” by no longer allowing our private accounts to appear on the same page as our business accounts. It is all for “our security” and is nothing to do with them trying to make extra money from transfers. It also means we have to remember a whole new second set of log in details, passwords and, to add insult to injury, we now have to use a drop down box to select three letters or numbers from an extra security word.
It makes you wonder if anyone thought of how difficult it is to work out which are characters 3, 12 & 15 from a complicated security word which has to include numbers and letters! Let alone the time it takes scrolling through the list of letters and numbers they offer you.
The free commission on overseas purchases is almost certain to be more than compensated for by charging the retailer more commission on the sale itself. That way it is the nasty retailer charging you.
Banks giving something away? When hell freezes over!

Hello, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam remarks? If so how do you reduce it, any plugin or anything you can advise? I get so much lately it’s driving me mad so any assistance is very much appreciated.
Normally just label them as spam. If persistent I complain to the company hosting the spamming website. I actually get so few comments I might make the blog uncommentable if the spam number gets too great. It is possible to use a code system to force membership before commenting. Might consider that too.
